Finding the right frames for your face can be tricky. While there are rules you can follow, they aren’t set in concrete. Many people choose to ignore all the rules and put fashion first.
Fashion is probably one of the biggest factors that people look at when choosing a frame. They’ve seen certain styles being worn by people in the media or by friends and want to look the same, or they have their own individual idea of fashion they want to portray to others.
Sadly tough, not every fashion suits every face shape or complexion, so here are some general rules to help you choose a frame that will work for your face shape.
This is a full face, with the same width and length and with little or no angles
Choose frames that make the face look longer and thinner. Angular frames that are wider than they are deep can enhance this face shape.
Strong jaw lines with a relatively short face characterises this face shape
Choose frames that make the face look longer; frames that are rounder on the bottom rim and not too deep.
Oval faces are balanced, with a chin slightly narrower than the forehead
Choose frames that keep that same balanced look, making sure the glasses frame doesn’t overwhelm the face.
Characteristics of this face shape are a wide forehead, high cheekbones and the face narrowing toward the chin
Very light colours and rimless styles work well to balance the face, as do frames that are wider at the bottom than the top.
Angular jawlines and a long face
Choose rounded frames that are deep in shape and take up more of the face.
Does the frame fit well on your nose?
Can the frame be adjusted so it doesn’t slip down all the time?
Is the frame suitable for your prescription glasses? Strong prescriptions can limit your choice
Is the frame suitable for your lifestyle? A delicate frame may not work for someone who takes their prescription glasses on and off all day at a construction site for example, or for someone who does contact sports.
Our staff can advise you on the practical side of frame suitability but when it comes to fashion you can choose to break all the rules if you want to.
Be brave and try on styles that you don’t think will suit you and you might be surprised at how good the person in the mirror looks!
